Kirk Maggio is a Maryland based artist who works on national and international projects with his fine art oil paintings. The demand for his work was initiated early on with his sports art, but most recently, Kirk has shifted his focus on landscapes, water imagery, and 3-dimensional oil paintings that have been extremely popular. His new and unique “3D Paintures” (a combination of sculpture and oil painting that are cut, sculpted, and sanded from a wood paint panel) have exploded in popularity. The work literally jumps out of the frame giving the viewer a unique visual experience. Each piece is meticulously hand cut from a larger panel then painted. The frame is also hand cut and shaped to allow the subject matter to flow outside the frame.
Maggio’s portraits of professional athletes have been commissioned for private collections and commercial projects for decades. His love of sports and personalized expression of the subject fuel the energy in his work while subtle details, fluid brushstrokes and vibrant colors bring movement and life that so characterize a Maggio painting. The paintings for golf holes are some of the artist’s favorite works. The serenity and beauty of his work have inspired commissions from some of the most famous golf courses around the world. He uses the finest oil paints available and his work is hand painted on Belgium linen.
Kirk has worked collaboratively with Steel Artist Karl Zaar on Nascar paintings including one for Indy 500 winner Denny Hamlin. The piece was included in a live auction for Hamlin’s celebrity golf event on Daniel Island, SC. Kirk has also recently been granted permission to reference photos for paintings from internationally renowned London based photographer, Antony Zacharia.
Past commissions include portraits of Shaquille O’Neal “Shaq by Maggio” and Dwayne Wade "Wade by Maggio", the first official NBA oil paintings of "Shaq" and "Flash" showcasing the Miami Heat's dynamic duo both on-the-court and in mesmerizing portraits. Maggio’s artistic realism and bold colors capture the essence and sheer charisma of these NBA superstars. Publisher Cash Appeal released limited edition giclee prints and open edition lithographs that were available for sale at the NBA Store on New York’s 5th Avenue, art galleries and online sports memorabilia stores across the country.
But the most special commission that Kirk received was from Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and the rest of the President’s Cup team members. They asked Kirk to create a portrait of Jack Nicklaus’s late Grandson, Jake as a gift for their captain. This painting hangs proudly in Jack and Barbara’s home.
Kirk was an All-American Punter at UCLA, before being selected in the 1990 National Football League (NFL) draft by the Green Bay Packers. He was also an All-World punter with the Birmingham Fire of the World Football League. Maggio’s passion and understanding of sport are apparent in his work. He has been commissioned by over 40 NFL players including recently inducted Hall of Fame Safety Brian Dawkins, Hines Ward, and Matt Stover. Numerous PGA golfers have also commissioned original oil paintings for their private collections. Some of Maggio’s other commissions include the following: 2003-2005 Honda Classic at the Country Club of Mirasol, including portraits of annual winners and paintings of the signature holes. The Baltimore Ravens commissioned reproductions of his work for each luxury suite of PSI Net Stadium, including Raven’s owner Art Modell’s personal skybox. The Baltimore Orioles selected Maggio to create their 1999 Opening Day program cover and most recently asked him to create a commemorative painting capturing Oriole Park.
